iPhoned in

Today my wife and I felt it was time to throw away our crappy LG Chocolates in favor of some iPhones.
My initial thoughts were that the iPhone was far better engineered than the lowly Chocolate. I mean, come on, why would you put touch sensitive buttons in the exact same area that your cheek goes if they aren’t disabled at key times? An even better question is why this new trend in sliding phones exists? None of them have any sort of a locking mechanism, and thus all of them will freely slide open in your pocket and the precious touch sensitive buttons on the outer face plate will get abused raw. Anybody for modified contacts by denim?
Thankfully the iPhone happily solves the majority of issues that I had with my previous phones, and it does so in a very elegant and stylish fashion.
Unfortunately I’ve had a few slight issues since buying my iPhone just a few short hours ago. The very first happened right after I activated my phone via itunes, and attempted to update the software.
After waiting for the software to download an install, I was greeted with a very friendly looking message notifying me that my iPhone had crashed and needed to recover. I figured that was a bit odd, but as long as it can recover then I really don’t care. Sure enough, the iPhone took a few short minutes, and fixed itself. The best bit is that it updated the firmware in the process.
The next problem I ran into was a bit strange and I’m almost not sure how to place blame.. Basically, I haven’t gotten over the very uncomfortable feeling of using an iPhone in public places like Walmart. I’m not sure why it feels so awkward, but I’m sure I’ll get over it. Either way, Apple isn’t to blame for making a fine product.
From my daily news feeds and just general communication with friends, it’s come to my attention that the iPhone is incredibly easy to unlock. Taking nothing more than a trip to a web page where some clever tiff exploit does the dirty work for you. I’m also aware, however, that unlocking your iPhone voids the warranty. Because of this, I’m thinking that since February is only a short ways away, any issues I currently have can be fixed once the SDK is released.
This makes February a pretty busy month for me, what with the difficult decision of going to acts_as_conference + a week’s vacation in Florida, or the Pragmatic Erlang Studio in Chicago. Hmm. Universal Studios, or fanning out on Joe Armstrong? Sigh. If only time and money were plentiful and free.
Luckily I purchased The Orange Box for the 360 today, and I reckon I’ll have little trouble drowning my sorrows in Portal.
